Local Attractions
Captain Eoghan (“The Shoe”) O’Reilly (1651 – 1723) [ Facebook link here ] – fought at the battle of the Boyne and later served in the Irish Brigade of the French Army, where he fought at The Surprise of Cremona (Italy) in 1702. He descended from the O’Reilly Clan locally of Tullyvin Castle. His resting place is located at Drung Old Graveyard just 1.5 km from The Stray Sod, where a commemoration plaque was placed in 2002 at the entrance to the cemetery.
The Site of Finn MacCool’s Fingers [ Facebook link here ] situated on the northern side of Shantemon Hill just 6.5km from The Stray Sod, with some splendid views of County Cavan features a set of five standing stones. The name of which is derived from the story that the giant Celtic warrior Fionn MacCumhaill lost a hand in battle. The magnificent stones are arranged in a south-east/north-west orientation representing the five fingers believed to have been erected
during the Bronze Age.
