About The Stray Sod Pub Cavan

“The Stray Sod” is a family run pub, with long serving loyal staff for the past 22 years - offering polite and friendly service to its customers. We are a miles from the start of Irelands Ancient East district and the pub was built with reclaimed stone in the year 2000, the Millennium year. It has a function room upstairs to cater for all types of private parties.

The dining area downstairs is part of an open plan lounge where you can enjoy your meal. There is lots of parking with an overflow area at our local shop, adjacent to the pub. The Stray Sod is also a welcoming meeting point for hen & stag party breakfasts.

We also caters for birthday’s, first communion’s, confirmation’s, wedding after parties and funeral meals. Our pub has become a frequent meeting place for families for funeral meals, after cremation services have been completed at the “Lakeland Crematorium” in Cavan Town.

We give a warm welcome to all our amazing. local community customers aswell as to passing trade - which is situated on the R188 road, which is the proposed route for the national East / West Road Link. We sponsor the local Men & Ladies football team and we also sponsor the local DB Cycling Club.

The Pub is a short distance away from the site of the grave of Captain Eoghan (“The Shoe”) O’Reilly (1651 – 1723) - descended from the O’Reilly’s of Tullyvin Castle. He fought at the battle of the Boyne and later served in the Irish Brigade of the French Army where he fought at The Surprise of Cremona (Italy) in 1702. 

Also, the site of Finn MacCool’s Fingers are situated on the northern side of Shantemon Hill, the alignment was hidden in a conifer plantation up until recently, now that most of the trees has been cleared on the side of the hill we are now rewarded with some splendid views of County Cavan.

The row is aligned along a NE-SW axis and is about 16 meters long, consisting of four large bulky standing stones, the largest is almost 2 meters high with a fallen small boulder at the NE end of the row. The row stands on a small plateau about 180 meters up the hill not too far from the top The best way to approach is from a small road running along the northern side of the hill.
